How do I know if my vehicle was involved in a recall?

There are many reasons you may have missed a recall notice. Perhaps you have recently moved to West Virginia from out of state and still get your mail elsewhere, for example. Luckily, it is quite easy to determine whether your vehicle has been involved in an official recall notice.

Simply navigate to the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration recall website. Look for the field near the top of the page. You should be able to enter the 17-number vehicle identification code of the car or truck you would like to investigate. For more information and next steps, please continue reading.

To find your VIN, refer to the vehicle registration, the insurance card or the small plate near the left corner of the windshield. As a brief sidenote, since this is a unique code associated with your vehicle, it could also be helpful to store the information along with other vital files in your home or online.

If you do discover that your vehicle was involved in a recall, it is probably the automobile manufacturer's responsibility to make an attempt to resolve the situation. In most cases, this means that you could take your car into a dealer or licensed mechanic to have the problem fixed.

Generally, the law allows manufacturers a fair chance to remedy the issues that their defective or malfunctioning parts cause. This means that you would probably have to give the mechanics a chance to repair your car before you take advantage of the West Virginia lemon law.

It is important to follow all the rules when it comes to recalls and defective vehicles. However, these rules are not always the same for every situation. please do not think of this as legal advice. It is only meant to form a general background.
